WhatsApp lead follow up message sample: The Wise Parrot guide with copy-ready messages
Short answerA good WhatsApp lead follow up message sample does three things: it reminds the lead what they asked about in their own words, it adds one useful new fact or option, and it ends with one easy question. Send the first follow-up within the 24-hour chat window as a normal message; after 24 hours of silence, WhatsApp only allows a Meta-approved template, so save your samples as templates with spaces for the lead's details.

A lead tapped your ad, asked a question on WhatsApp, got a reply, and went quiet. Now you need the right words. This page gives you a WhatsApp lead follow up message sample for each common situation, so you can copy one, change the details, and send it today.

The short version: a WhatsApp lead follow up message sample that works names what the lead asked about, adds one useful fact or option, and ends with one easy question. "Hi sir, any update?" does none of those three things.

This guide is for owners of travel agencies, real estate firms, clinics, D2C brands, coaching centres and other businesses in India that get enquiries from Click-to-WhatsApp ads.

The 3-part shape behind every good follow-up

Before the samples, the pattern. Every message below follows it:

  1. Their words first. "You asked about the 3 BHK in Wakad" lands better than "Following up on your enquiry". It proves a person read the chat.
  2. One new thing. A fact, a second option, a date that is filling up, an answer to the doubt they had. Never the same message twice.
  3. One easy question. Something they can answer in a word: "This week or next?", "Morning or evening slot?", "Should I share both?"

Keep it under 50 words. Leads read follow-ups on a lock screen.

These work for any industry. Replace the parts in square brackets.

1. The lead never replied to your first answer (next morning)

Good morning [Name]! You asked about [product/package] last night. I have two options that fit what you wrote. Should I send the one for [option A] or [option B]?

2. The lead went quiet after you shared the price or quote

Hi [Name], you were looking at [package] for [dates]. If the budget feels high, I can share one version that keeps [the thing they liked] and costs less. Want to see it?

3. The lead said "I'll call you later" or "I'll check and tell you"

Hi [Name], no rush. When you check, the one thing that decides it for many people is [key choice]. Shall I send a short comparison so the discussion is easier?

Swap in your own fact if you can: "the one thing families ask us about is the hotel location".

4. The lead said "I'll ask my family / partner"

Hope the family discussion went well, [Name]! If anyone had a question about [open concern], send it here and I'll answer it directly.

5. The lead asked for details and you sent a brochure or PDF

Hi [Name], the brochure is long, so here is the one line that matters for you: [fact tied to what they asked]. Is [next step, such as a call or visit] this week possible?

6. The last message before you stop

I won't disturb you further, [Name]. If you plan [product/package] later, just reply here and we'll pick up from where we left.

The same 3-part shape, with the details an owner in each industry would actually send.

7. Travel agency (after a quote)

Hi [Name], your [Kerala, 5 nights, 4 people] quote is ready to hold. The houseboat night can be added or skipped. Should I share both versions?

8. Travel agency (seasonal, to a past enquirer, as a template)

Hi [Name], you asked us about [destination] earlier. [Month] dates are opening up now. Want me to check options for your group size?

9. Real estate (after a site visit)

Hi [Name], thanks for visiting [project] on [day]. You asked about [parking / possession date / floor]. Here is the answer: [fact]. Would a second visit with family on the weekend help?

10. Real estate (lead asked for price and went quiet)

Hi [Name], you asked about the [2 BHK] at [project]. Besides the price, buyers also compare [carpet area / possession timeline]. Should I send the floor plan?

11. Clinic (after an appointment enquiry)

Hello [Name], you asked about [treatment/consultation] at [clinic]. The doctor is available on [day] morning and [day] evening. Which suits you better?

12. D2C brand (after a product question)

Hi [Name], you asked if [product] comes in [size/variant]. Yes, it does, and [one useful fact like delivery area or return policy]. Want the link to order?

13. Coaching or school admissions

Hello [Name], you asked about [course/class] admissions. The next batch starts on [date] and the counselling call takes about 15 minutes. Shall I book a slot?

14. Any business (lead came from an ad but sent only "Hi")

Hi [Name], thanks for writing! Were you asking about [offer from the ad] or something else? Tell me one detail and I'll send the right information.

The 24-hour rule: when a sample must be a template

WhatsApp has one rule that changes how you use these samples. Through the WhatsApp Business API, a business can send any normal message within 24 hours of the customer's last message. After 24 hours of silence, only a message template approved by Meta can go out.

So in practice:

  • Samples 1, 3, 4, 5 and 14 are best sent inside the 24-hour window, as normal messages.
  • Samples 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 may fall outside it, so submit them to Meta as templates with variables for the name and the details in square brackets.
  • Send only to people who contacted you or agreed to hear from you, and give an easy way to say no. A lead who says "not interested" gets no more follow-ups.

Do follow-up messages actually work?

They can restart a conversation that would otherwise end. On one travel account on The Wise Parrot with follow-ups switched on, 853 of 1,307 travellers who got a follow-up after going quiet replied after it, which is 65% (30 days to 26 Oct 2026). Any reply counts, including "not now", so this shows restarted conversations, not bookings. The full data is in the travel case study.

A reply is not a sale. But a lead who replies is a lead you can still help, and a lead nobody contacts again is ad money already written off.

4 follow-up mistakes to avoid

  • "Any update?" It asks the lead to do the work of remembering the whole chat. Read why generic follow-ups fail.
  • Copy-pasting the same message to every lead. Leads notice. Use their words.
  • Following up at 11 PM. Send follow-ups in daytime, even if the lead first wrote at night.
  • Never stopping. Three thoughtful messages beat ten reminders. For a stage-by-stage plan, see how long to keep following up a quiet WhatsApp lead.

Your 15-minute check for this week

  1. Open 10 ad chats from last week that went quiet. How many got any follow-up?
  2. For each follow-up sent, did it name what the lead asked about?
  3. Pick the 3 situations above that come up again and again in your business and write your own version of each.
  4. Submit the ones you send after 24 hours to Meta as templates.
  5. Next week, count how many quiet leads replied after a follow-up.

Quick answers

What is a good WhatsApp lead follow up message sample?

Example: 'Hi Priya, you asked about the 5-night Kerala trip for 4 people yesterday. The houseboat night can be added or skipped. Should I share both versions?' It names what they asked, adds one fact, and ends with one easy question.

Can I send a WhatsApp follow-up message after 24 hours?

Through the WhatsApp Business API, a business can send a free-form message only within 24 hours of the customer's last message. After that, only a template approved by Meta can be sent, so write your follow-up samples as templates with variables like the customer's name and what they asked about.

How many follow-up messages should I send to a WhatsApp lead?

Follow the lead's stage, not a fixed count. A first follow-up the next day, one more with a new fact or option, and a polite last message that leaves the door open is a sensible plan for an ad lead that went quiet. Stop when the lead says no.

Do WhatsApp follow-up messages work?
